Sexual Health Counselling

What is sexual health and sexual health counselling?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), sexual health is “a state of physical mental, and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality”. The WHO says that sexual health is optimal when people are engaging in pleasurable and safe sexual experiences.

Unfortunately, many presentations and complications related to sexual health continue to be stigmatised today. Here at Mindful Psychology, we can assure you that you will experience a safe space to discuss your sexual needs and concerns. Sexual health concerns are so broad, so it is more than likely that many of us will come across them in our lifetime.

Some examples of sexual health concerns might be:

Sexual difficulties in relationships with others and ourself

  • Change to, or loss of, sexual libido
  • Mismatched libido
  • Infidelity
  • Infertility
  • Sexual performance difficulties
    • Difficulty achieving an orgasm
    • Performance anxiety
    • Maintaining erection
    • Ejaculation difficulty
    • Difficulty secreting natural lubricant
  • Painful intercourse
  • Sexual boredom
  • Intimacy
  • Sexual abuse and trauma
  • Sexual fears
  • Sexual exploration
  • Medical diagnoses relating to sexual health (e.g., STIs)

LGBTQ+ related issues (read more here)

  • Gender and sexual identity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Homophobia
  • Coming out
  • Sexual exploration

Compulsions or Addictions

  • Sexual compulsions
  • Addiction to porn
  • Addiction to masturbating
  • Unwanted fetishes
When should you seek sexuality counselling?
If any of the points above resonate with you, they might interfere with other areas of your life such as your self-esteem, relationships, or general emotional wellbeing. Sexual health therapy endeavours to improve your sexual wellbeing as well as your relationship with yourself and others.

At Mindful Psychology, your therapist will create a safe space for you to discuss your concerns, and endeavour to give you coping skills to manage the cause of your distress. These may include:

  • Communication skills
  • Sensate or mindfulness exercises
  • Physical exercises
  • Exploring your feelings
  • Helping you to uncover the underlying causes of your concerns
  • Helping you to resolve any issues that are trauma-related
